The Statement of Intent

What is my Intention with this Magazine? My magazine called 'Stander' will be based around promoting a sustainable and healthy lifestyle for young people aged 16-25, people who are most likely at university, school or college and have many pressures around them but need to be able to stand up for themselves and their futures. This magazine will show how they can improve mental health around them and fight for social and environmental issues. Each issue of 'Stander' will focus on one individual who is fighting for something important for young adults, positively represented by mise-en-scene linked to what they do so that others are inspired to do the same. This will cover a niche audience which Hearst magazines does not cater for as any lifestyle magazines for young people in the past have often been discouraging through exaggerated body images. Hearst already wants to change these representations in other magazines like Vogue. Therefore, 'Stander' will cater to...

Faith Robinson - Nature Conservationist Who are they? She is a local volunteer of 17 years in the Hull area working with the Humber Council to conserve and protect the surrounding nature near the River Humber and in the city itself such as in parks. As part of this ongoing protection of wildlife, she is developing her talents as a photographer inspired by Ansel Adams who was an American conservationist. His use of photographs to convince people certain natural areas were too beautiful to be spoilt has inspired her to do the same. She hopes to inspire her own generation of 16 to 18 year-olds to work harder to protect vital areas of the environment in the Hull area through her pictured landscapes. Faith hopes to achieve this because she believes nature is important for people like her parents who have been forced to work in inner city areas their whole lives to make a living. In her own words, she wants 'people to look out the window and see a world they want to be in rather than so...

Meet the Target Audience

Target Audience: The target audience for my NEA coursework magazine will be teenagers of any background, gender or ethnicity from the ages of 16 to 19 as all teenagers need positive role models, advice and simply knowing that someone cares about them and their struggles. Figures like '7% of teenagers have attempted suicide by 17 in the UK' and '80% of teens feel under pressure to save the planet' show the need for something reliable and consistent in their lives which can point them in better directions such as this magazine. Each magazine cover will focus on an exclusive interview with a particular teenager who is doing something important for their community and society in general, such as conservationists who have been fighting for their local wildlife or others who have set up support for people with poor mental health. The aim of these front covers and the included material is to target teenagers who want to be able to help their local and wider issues.  30% of ...

What Are Lifestyle Magazines?

Image
For my NEA Media Coursework, I am required to produce a lifestyle magazine for Hearst, a production company famous for these magazines: Men's Health, Women's Health, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Country Living, Harper's Bazaar and others. What is a Lifestyle Magazine?      Lifestyle magazines are an inherent part of consumer culture as they are intended to be purchased by people with the disposable income to achieve the lifestyle which these magazines advertise. The main point of them is to introduce health, work and leisure tips to a specific demographic, centred around the status the reader can achieve if they buy what is advertised or follow the tips from interviewed celebrities. Hearst’s wide range of magazines such as Esquire, Men’s Heath and Cosmopolitan are good examples of lifestyle magazines which seek to persuade their demographic to spend more of their disposable income that they likely have on high-end, quality products or achieve a certain look physically to...
